This old plaid shirt

This old plaid shirt

That I wore to a

middle-school

basketball game,

where pretty-faced girls

gathered in the bathroom

and laughed at me,

for the sake of laughing,

I wore it today,

To an oral exam

Where American lit

Trailed from tongue to temple

Of a professor feigned unimpressed.

So, youngling, laugh then

since now you’ve lost any chance

left to play.

Laugh heartily,

And I’ll just wait my turn.
